Pioneers of Equality

The Rhode Island 1st Regiment: Pioneers of Equality highlights the powerful story of one of America’s earliest integrated military units. Presented by Lorén M. Spears and Robert A. Geake, this educator session focuses on the formation, service, and legacy of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment—composed significantly of African American and Indigenous soldiers. Formed in response to both local ideals and British threats, the regiment earned respect for its performance at pivotal moments such as the Battle of Rhode Island and Yorktown.

The presentation covers recruitment, training under Baron von Steuben, and the regiment’s strategic roles, including holding the “last line of defense.” It also honors their continued service and recognition as Revolutionary soldiers. Supporting materials include historic maps, journal entries, legislative documents, and curated educational resources for classroom use—bringing visibility to these unsung patriots and reinforcing their place in the nation’s founding narrative.
