The Liberty Tree Project
Planting Roots of Freedom Across Rhode Island
In partnership with the Rhode Island Historical Society, the RI250 Commission is collecting donations to fund the Liberty Tree Project, an initiative honoring America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The project aims to plant a Red Maple tree in each of Rhode Island’s thirty-nine municipalities, commemorating the state’s pivotal role in the American Revolution.

Little Compton Rhode Island Red Maple Liberty Tree Planting
On Monday, September 8, the RI250 Commission, in coordination with the Little Compton 350 Committee, hosted the first commemorative Liberty Tree plantings in Rhode Island.
Each tree represents more than just history — it’s a living reminder of Rhode Island’s contribution to liberty and democracy. As they grow, these Liberty Trees will serve as gathering spaces, educational touchpoints, and symbols of shared heritage for generations to come.
