What was the most surprising thing to come of the American Revolution was triumph over the titan of military power that was Britain. Their navy, especially, was impossibly vast and formidable, and of a caliber we may never see again. It struck wonder in many, then, when the U.S. Navy, a few frigates, sloops, and retrofitted merchant vessels, saw the successes that normally only a much larger maritime force ought to have achieved. It especially increasingly vexed and infuriated the British.
Prof. Evan Wilson discusses British perspective of the U.S. Navy, and Rhode Island’s crucial part in the Navy’s construction, which in turn was essential for separation from America’s mother country.
