July the 4th is home to the largest event the Rhode Island Society Sons of the Revolution sponsors. Along with the Daughters of the American Revolution, they honor the achievements and sacrifices made by the founding fathers. A concert hosted by the Salve Regina University Community Band starts at 10. During this time, the Colony House at Washington Square, from which government in Rhode Island was conducted up until the completion of the current State House. At 11:00 A.M, there will be a reenactment of Major John Handy reading the Declaration of Independence directly outside the Colony House. The Artillery Company of Newport is also attending, ready to give a 21 gun salute to the founding of our nation.
