Newport, RI – As the nation embarks on a multi-year commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, historian and educator Dr. Fred Zilian has launched a compelling lecture series exploring important themes and pivotal events of this era. On March 19, 2025, he delivered the inaugural lecture, “The British-German Occupation of Aquidneck Island, 1776-79,” at the Newport Public Library, setting the stage for an engaging lineup of talks over the coming years.
Through these lectures, Dr. Zilian draws intriguing parallels between the revolutionary era and today—highlighting themes such as national identity, the meaning of freedom, bitter partisanship, and political violence. “Understanding the American Revolution,” he states, “can provide valuable insights into the challenges we face as a nation today.”
