Stories about artificial life are older than the technology that inspired them. Pygmalion’s statue, the Golem, Pinocchio. The questions they raise about identity, ethics and responsibility have only grown more urgent as drones, prosthetics and adaptive software move those old myths closer to daily life.
Rhode Island sculptor Krzysztof Mathews builds an ecosystem of cyborg creatures out of discarded material, work that sits directly in that lineage. In this illustrated talk he shares his process and the thinking behind it: how he harvests and sorts scrap, the tools and techniques involved, and how a pile of broken material ends up with a face and a personality. Followed by Q&A.
Mathews is an exhibiting artist in WCFA’s 40th Annual Rhode Island Open, on view through November 21, so guests can see his work in the gallery and then hear how it was made. The gallery opens at 12 pm ahead of the talk.
All ages. No registration required. Donation based, suggested donation $10, no one turned away.
