America’s Oldest Fourth of July Celebration – Bristol, RI

July 4

Bristol has a claim to the oldest independence celebration in the country, or what was then known in 1785 as the Patriotic Exercises. The idea first formed in the mind of Rev. Henry Wright, a Revolutionary War veteran.

Since then, Bristol has prided itself on the turnout and spirit of its population. Although not originally a part of these Exercises, the parade itself began sometime in the early 1800’s.

Named the “Military, Civic and Firemen’s Parade,” the parade will begin at 10:30 AM sharp, on the corner of Chestnut and Hope Street, and ends on High Street.

There are also many other events taking place in Bristol on this fateful day. Please consult the website of Bristol Fourth of July Committee for more information.
